Getting an Education

Lone Scherfig

Based on a short story by Lynn Barber which author Nick Hornby extended into a screenplay, An Education tells the story of Jenny, a bright and precocious teenager who, while standing in the rain in a suburb of London on her way home from school, is approached by an older man who she later falls in love with and exposes her to a life that she believes she wants. When he steps into the picture, Jenny’s years of work that made her eligible for Oxford fall to the wayside. But soon enough, a harsh truth hits her, forcing her to question her innocence, her love and her future. Set in the early 1960's in an England that is still recovering from the war and rationing, An Education tells many tales and goes far beyond a coming of age story. Lone Scherfig, a Danish director and part of the Dogme 95 movement, directed the film and discusses it here.
